Room Makeover

Every child that comes to the center have endured a lot in their young lives, whether it be neglect, physical or sexual abuse. It is not only Children’s Alliance of South Texas mission to create a positive safe space at the center but to also create a safe space at the homes of these child victims. In some cases, the victimization occurred in the child’s bedroom. In most of these cases, some of these victims do not feel comfortable being alone or sleeping in their own bed and often feel unsafe because they are reminded of the trauma they experienced in their room.

Children’s Alliance of South Texas and its staff believe a room makeover is the start of a new beginning for victims and their family. Family Advocates and our partner agencies work together to nominate a child if they feel they can benefit from having a room makeover. A makeover can include a change in bedding, furniture, paint, and décor that tends to the child’s likes or needs. With the help of staff, the community, and volunteers, our Family Advocates will completely change a child’s room and give them a safe new space to call their own. Our Family Advocates work closely with families to personalize and design a room that makes our clients feel safe again.

Room Makeovers come at zero cost to our families and is 100% funded with money raised through our annual events, fundraisers, and community donations. The funding is also used to send the family on an outing such as the movies or an amusement park while the makeover is completed. Once the family returns from their outing, the child will be surprised with their new room! Children’s Alliance of South Texas has now completed two room makeovers in the last year. In each of those projects the child expressed how grateful they were to no longer be reminded of their trauma. A change in bedding, curtains, or even a rug can give a child a sense hope to move forward and not let their abuse define them.
